So as a lot of you know the US is pushing to ban TikTok through bill S.686, however what a lot of you do not know is this bill does so much more other than ban TikTok. I was reading through it yesterday morning its actually kind of wild. I dont think this bill will be successful in being passed because its so extreme. however.
Summary of the bill: (with source snips)
- Bans any software / hardware manufactured by the USA's foreign adversaries.
A foreign adversary covered in the bill outlines: North Korea, China, Russia, Cuba, etc etc.
- This also gives the USA the right to monitor devices owned by users suspected of breaking the laws this would create (Computers, cameras, modems etc etc) In summary it gives the goverment the right to spy on the US people.
- If you use a VPN to bypass this potentially created laws then you could be subject to 20 years in prison and a fine of $1,000,000
These are the things you dont hear about. The headline was "The USA is trying to ban TikTok" however that is only a small fraction of what they are imposing.
