Crypto is completely mainstream, people are scheming to make quick money or the rich trying to get richer and victimized by State Threat Actors, this is the problem with exchanges, the whole point of cryptocurrency was for it to be decentralized but people are allured by exchanges (which are just modern day banks) for convenience. That's whats going on. It's like the California Gold Rush, who can hodl the most cryptocurrency the fastest (specifically individuals, groups, etc, it's literally gold).
The older generation of people are a bit less literate and use their assets (which is a generational thing) to flex and become a target to said attacks; but to answer your question, people are becoming more aware of crypto schemes done by Threat and/or State Actors and that's probably why ETH staking in particular is flourishing.
