How to: Secure a PSN account
This thread will help you secure your new Playstation account fully and securely, however these steps do not guarantee an impenetrable barrier if the account you just bought/exchanged gets recovered via Playstation support for example.
I strongly advise you, when securing a PSN account, and even for any type of account, to do it via a computer and from the Sony website (click to be redirected to the website)
Step 1:
Verify the date of birth (DOB) of your account
Knowing the date of birth of your account from the start could save you in the following steps because by changing your password or email, the PSN account may be temporarily locked and ask you to enter the date of birth, knowing it in advance could save you from this kind of situation.
To know or change this information (if your Sony account is eligible to change the date of birth), go to this link
Log in and in "My account information", you should see your birth date, note it well or change it as you wish
Step 2:
Change the email address
From this website, go to Account - Security
Click on modify and enter your desired email (please note the old email somewhere)
Step 3:
Change your password
In the same tab, click on "Change password".
I advise you to use a strong password, or one generated by a software (Such as Dashlane for example), with upper/lower cases and/or symbols (%$@=) and a minimum of 8 characters.
Step 4 (optional):
Create a security question, and be sure to write down your answer somewhere (notes from your phone, Word document, sheet of paper, ...)
Step 5:
Family Management
The seller you just bought your account from may have maliciously added your profile to a Playstation family, which will let him/her know your email address but also restrict content such as games and movies or limit communication features such as chat and messaging.
In the "PlayStation Network" section, click on "Family Management" and make sure that nothing is displayed.
Step 6:
Device management
In the "Device Management" section, click on "PlayStation Consoles" and disable the consoles still connected if there are any left.
Additional steps to achieve full security:
- Add a prepaid PlayStation card/payment method
This will reinforce the information you control and know about your account, you may be required to provide information such as the last 4 digits of linked credit cards or connected PayPal.
- Transaction History
Take screenshots of purchases made from your PSN account, if you don't have any, I advise you to make a small purchase like COD Points or a PSN avatar.
The important information is the transaction details, where you can find the Transaction ID, the order form or even the payment method.
Finally, the last step would be to create a text folder with ALL the possible information (address, name+first name, password, purchases etc etc)
You are now the master of your account and almost protected, but note that buying goods/accounts on Internet are risky, even if you are the first console connected or the first owner, nobody is ever totally safe!
Use a Trusted Middleman for every deal !
Thanks for checking out this post, hope it helped some.
