Officials are warning that smuggling eggs from Mexico or Canada can result in fines up to $10,000 due to the rising egg prices in the US. Many people are tempted to cross the border to buy eggs for half the price, but seizures at border posts have spiked by over 100%. Egg prices in the US were up 60% in December compared to the previous year and seizures of eggs and poultry rose 108% between October and December, according to Department of Agriculture statistics. The director of Customs and Border Protection's San Diego Field Operations tweeted that her office has recently noticed an increase in the number of eggs intercepted at ports of entry. Individuals face civil fines of approximately $300 and those who declare their eggs may avoid fines altogether.
