Core DAO confirmed that a subset of validators received more $CORE in rewards than the protocol intended. No numbers yet on how much extra was issued, which validators were affected, or what caused it. The team says user funds are safe and that this is purely a reward-issuance bug, not a custody or security problem. A postmortem is promised once the issue is contained.
Two exchanges reacted differently. Coinbase opened an incident at 04:41 UTC on Aug 31, ahead of Core's own public statement at 05:24 UTC, and paused $CORE sends and receives while leaving buys, sells, conversions and fiat transactions running. As of 17:38 UTC that incident was still listed as investigating. LBank suspended $CORE deposits separately at 05:00 UTC, citing "project requirements," with no withdrawal or trading halt mentioned and no restoration timeline given.
The reason this matters is that Core's validator rewards are made up of newly minted tokens plus fees, split 90/10 between validators/delegators and a system reward contract. If the excess came from new issuance rather than rewards simply paid early, it touches Core's fixed 2.1 billion supply cap, which includes an 839.9 million allocation for node mining spread across 81 years. Whether the extra CORE gets clawed back, burned, or offset against future emissions hasn't been addressed.
Nothing so far confirms a direct link between the reward glitch and the exchange restrictions, and the two exchanges aren't even restricting the same thing. Anyone else seeing updates from Core or from other venues listing $CORE?
