Interesting one for anyone buying crypto on Robinhood with a credit card. Reports are circulating that Robinhood's memecoin purchases are being merchant-coded as digital media rather than as a crypto or cash-advance transaction. That coding matters because most card issuers exclude crypto purchases from earning rewards points, and several explicitly treat crypto buys as cash-like transactions that can trigger fees and no points at all.

Chase is apparently among the issuers pushing back, saying purchases coded this way should not be earning points under their own crypto exclusion policies. The question now is whether Visa steps in and forces Robinhood or its payment processor to recode these transactions properly. If that happens, cardholders who've been racking up points buying $DOGE, $SHIB or whatever memecoin flavor of the week on Robinhood could suddenly see that stop, or possibly face retroactive clawbacks depending on how issuers respond.

This isn't a Robinhood announcement, it's coming out through reporting on how the transactions are being classified on the backend. No confirmation yet from Visa on any planned enforcement action, and no public statement from Robinhood explaining the coding choice.

Worth remembering this is a merchant category code issue, a fairly under-the-radar plumbing detail of how card networks work, but one that's apparently been letting people earn rewards on speculative crypto buys they normally wouldn't get.

Anyone here actually seeing points post for memecoin buys on Robinhood, and has your issuer said anything about it?

Memecoin traders cornered 53% of tokenized HIMS supply on Robinhood Chain

Follow-up to the earlier thread on Robinhood memecoin buys getting coded as digital media for card networks: https://kingz.net/threads/robinhood...ded-as-digital-media-for-card-networks.21328/

New angle now: traders are actively using Robinhood's tokenized stocks as the liquidity base for memecoin pairs, and it's dwarfing the "normal" stock token market.

On Sept. 2, memecoin pairs built against Robinhood's stock tokens did $217 million in volume, according to on-chain researcher Adam Tehc. Direct stock-token trading (people just buying tokenized Nvidia or HIMS shares as exposure) only did $127 million. The speculative layer is outtrading the investment layer by 1.7x.

The clearest example is a memecoin called BONER, which accumulated 31,198 of the 58,714 outstanding HIMS stock tokens, about 53% of the entire tokenized float, with more sitting in other meme pools. That left barely 20,000 tokens for ordinary trading pairs. Over the weekend, while NYSE was closed, the tokenized HIMS instrument printed as high as $132.64, versus a $28.84 close on the real stock the Friday before, a gap of roughly 4.6x.

New stock token supply only comes from a single authorized participant (identified as BBVI), so nobody stuck in the cornered pool could mint their way out until markets reopened. When they did, BBVI minted about 4,000 new tokens (~$115k worth), just 6.8% of prior supply, and that was enough to drag the price back toward the real stock.

The underlying equity was never touched, this was entirely a thin-wrapper liquidity event. The SEC has already said tokenizing a security doesn't change which securities laws apply, and the World Federation of Exchanges has flagged tokenized equities as a market-integrity concern.

Does this look like early stress-testing of real infrastructure, or a permanent feature of how these wrappers get traded?
