NATO Chief warns of China's possible support to Russia's war in Ukraine
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has warned China against supporting Russia's war in Ukraine, citing some signs that China may be planning to do so. He urged China not to violate international law and the U.N. charter by providing arms or other support to Russia's war. The warning comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin hosted the Chinese Communist Party's most senior foreign policy official, Wang Yi, raising concerns in the West that Beijing might be ready to offer Moscow stronger support in the almost year-old war. Stoltenberg stressed that while NATO is not a party to the conflict, the alliance will support Ukraine for as long as it takes.
Brazilian Floods Leave Isolated Survivors Struggling for Supplies
Brazil has experienced floods and landslides in Sao Paulo state, resulting in the deaths of at least 48 people, with dozens still missing. The affected area, famous for beach resorts, has left hundreds of residents in need of daily supplies and water, with criminals taking advantage of the chaos to loot trucks carrying donations. While government and private aid groups are working to provide necessities, the logistics of reaching the isolated towns have created difficulties. The homeless are being sheltered in schools, kindergartens, and churches, while tensions have emerged between wealthy tourists and poorer permanent residents as supplies run low. Sao Paulo state’s government has opened some damaged roadways in the region, but the recovery is expected to take time. Brazil’s Environment Minister, Marina Silva, visited the area and said that the government is working to improve the situation, focusing on the poorest who live near the hillside.
Over 8 Million Refugees Have Fled Ukraine Following a Year of Conflict, UN Reports
The UN refugee agency has reported that more than 8 million refugees have been recorded across Europe since Russia invaded Ukraine nearly a year ago. Poland has received the largest number of Ukrainian refugees, with an estimated 1.5 million, followed by other European countries like the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The director of program operations for Save the Children in Poland, Celina Kretkowska-Adamowicz, stated that financial support is the greatest need currently. She also highlighted that child protection, education, and emergency assistance are among the longer-term needs that Save the Children is currently addressing. With refugees attempting to move back to Ukraine, Kretkowska-Adamowicz emphasized that “after a while, they find out that they are not able to live like this, and then they decide to go back to Poland.”
Mine collapse in China kills 2 and leaves over 50 missing
At least two people have died, six have been rescued with injuries, and more than 50 are still missing after an open pit mine collapsed in China's northern Inner Mongolia region. The collapse buried people under debris at the mine in Alxa League, with state media reporting that the company running the mine had been fined last year for multiple safety violations. More than 300 rescue workers were operating 129 rescue vehicles in the search, which President Xi Jinping has demanded "all-out efforts in search and rescue of the missing and treatment of the injured." China has suffered numerous deadly industrial and construction accidents, which critics attribute to poor safety training, official corruption, and a tendency for companies to cut corners in pursuit of profits.
Pope Francis urges people to end superficial needs and embrace the true meaning of Lent
Pope Francis began the annual Lenten period of Christian sacrifice and reflection by urging people to drop the “dictatorship” of heavy schedules and superficial needs, and focus on the things that matter. Lent is a period of fasting, prayer and charity, in preparation for Easter, which falls on April 9 this year. During an early evening Mass in St. Sabina Basilica, ashes were sprinkled on Francis’ head while a choir sang hymns. In his homily, the pope emphasised the importance of caring for those who are poor and afflicted, and the joy of giving, and called for people to choose the things that truly matter.
UK Supermarkets Place Limits on Sales of Some Fresh Produce Due to Shortages
UK supermarkets, including Tesco, Aldi, and Morrisons, have temporarily limited the number of tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers that customers can purchase due to shortages blamed on bad weather in Spain and Morocco. Crop yields in Spain and Morocco, two of the UK's main suppliers of fresh produce during the winter, have been hurt by bad weather, leading to less produce being shipped to Britain. While opponents of Brexit are blaming the decision for the shortages, industry analysts argue that bad weather is the main culprit. The British Retail Consortium expects the disruption to last a few weeks.

Recovery Efforts Continue After Turkey-Syria Earthquake
Following the 6.4 magnitude earthquake in Turkey's Hatay province, emergency responders are working to shelter survivors as demolition teams clear rubble from the Feb. 6 earthquake in Turkey and Syria. The recent earthquake has killed eight people in Turkey and Syria, while the combined death toll from both earthquakes stands at around 46,000. The European Union is preparing for an international donor's conference to mobilize funds from the international community to support Turkey and Syria following the quake. The UN development program plans to support Turkey in the removal of rubble and the management of the debris from the earthquake's devastation. Meanwhile, Turkey's broadcasting watchdog has fined four television stations that have aired programs critical of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government's handling of the aftermath of the disaster, a move that is widely seen as a government attempt to censor negative coverage of the government's earthquake response ahead of elections scheduled to take place by June 18.
Cyclone Freddy causes damage and displacement in Madagascar, heads towards Mozambique and kills 4
A weakened Cyclone Freddy hit Madagascar on Tuesday night with heavy rains and strong destructive winds, killing four people and causing damage to nearly 5,000 homes. The cyclone battered the western city of Mananjary, displacing 16,660 people. The weakened winds and better preparation helped to limit further damage. The red alerts issued for Madagascar's east coast were lifted on Wednesday morning and the southwestern regions of the island have now been placed on "blue alert," indicating a phase of post-cyclone damage assessment, rescue, and recovery. Freddy, now classified as a "moderate tropical storm," is projected to leave the island Wednesday evening and head towards Mozambique, with fears of a new cyclone forming near the Chagos Archipelago in the Indian Ocean.
